“3D and Me!” — A Zoom Course with Dave Hopkins! Join PVSC for an introductory exploration of 3D printing. Instructor Dave Hopkins will guide participants through the fundamentals of the technology, its uses, and its creative potential. PVSC is excited to offer this engaging Zoom course where Dave Hopkins breaks down the magic of 3D printing and shows how anyone can get started. The sessions will be recorded, with the recording link available to view for two weeks for registered participants. This course is open to all current members of Penobscot Valley Senior College (PVSC) and other current Maine Senior College Network (MSCN) members. If you prefer the in-person option, check the PVSC website and register for that option instead of the Zoom option.

Course Overview

This six-week ZOOM course offers an engaging, easy-to-follow introduction to the world of 3D printing. No prior technical experience is needed. Together, the class will explore the history of 3D printing, the different types of printers. how they work, and the many ways you can participate–from using local printing services to understanding what’s involved in owning a home printer.
The group will also spend time learning how 3D printing files are created. This includes designing a simple project using a free online 3D CAD program–done step-by-step during class so everyone can follow along comfortably. Weekly friendly discussions and clear demonstrations will help make the learning process enjoyable and accessible.

What to Expect

Before the first session, take a look around your home environment. What everyday plastic items do you see? Think about the small things that often need replacing—wall hooks, gameboard pieces, door stoppers, watering bottle caps, or even a bagel-slicer holder to protect your fingers. Keep these ideas in mind; we’ll talk about them and other objects during the second session. Just bring your curiosity! The sessions will be recorded, with the recording link available to view for two weeks for registered participants.


About the Instructor

Mr. David Hopkins has worked in the field of computing for over 50 years, as a programmer, systems engineer, consultant, and entrepreneur. He has consulted to such companies as Safeway, Bayer, and Kaiser Engineering, as well as employment with the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. During his latter career years. Dave  became interested in 3D printing as a hobby and currently has two printers with which he creates a wide array of items, primarily of his own design. His belief that learning is a continual process has led him to his continuing research in this exciting industry.
Dave will be teaching on Zoom from California – (his time 1:00-3:00 (PDT)
