THE QUIETSIDE JOURNAL: Covering Local News on MDI

Acadia Senior College presents Lincoln Millstein, publisher of the Quietside Journal. Join us to hear Lincoln's confessions of a muck-raking local news blogger on Mount Desert Island, and lessons learned for a stronger community.

Lincoln Millstein is a retired media executive who started writing the news blog, The Quietside Journal, in April 2020. The journal is now read by more than 2,500 readers every week. Millstein fashions himself as a modern pamphleteer in the tradition of Thomas Paine and is an admirer of muckrakers Upton Sinclair, Lincoln Steffens and Ida Tarbell. He retired as senior vice president and chief of staff to the CEO of Hearst Corporation in 2019, where he spent 13 of the happiest years of his career. Previous to that he was chief operating officer of New York Times Digital. He served a 17-year sentence at the Boston Globe (huge Yankees fan), where he was business editor, city editor, features editor and VP of digital media. He is a graduate of the University of Connecticut (Go Huskies!) and attended Stanford Business School on a fellowship from the National Endowment for the Humanities. His idea for the blog germinated in Bellagio, Italy, where he was a resident fellow at the Rockefeller Institute in April 2017. He learned to cover local news as a reporter and editor at the Hartford Courant. He was born in Taiwan and became a U.S. Citizen in 1961.
