I'll bet you knew that 90% of Maine is tree-covered.

But can you name all those trees?

Identifying Native Maine Trees

Instructor: Merle Ring

Classroom: Tuesday, 7/18 at 1:00 PM • • •

Field trip: Thursday, 7/20 at 10:00 AM

Class size 6-20 students

Location: Klahr 103 & Field Trips

The Thursday, July 20 field trip will be to a forest in Sidney, Maine. Transportation is not provided, so carpooling is encouraged. This two-day class will focus on identifying native Maine trees, particularly those found around the Augusta area.

The Tuesday class will be a PowerPoint presentation of identification characteristics of Maine trees, based on the Maine Forest Service book – Forest Trees of Maine. Identifying features will include leaves, needles, bark, twigs, form, size, and color.

The following Thursday class will be a field event, looking at many different tree species and how to identify them as they grow in the forest. This class will appeal to anyone with an interest in forest management or with just a curiosity about the trees growing all around us in Maine. Participants should be prepared to walk on uneven ground on woodland roads and trails.

Students can purchase a copy of the book Forest Trees of Maine – Centennial Edition from the Maine Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry. Cost of the book is $15.00 plus tax and shipping.
