History
In 1996, a Senior College program was established at the University of Southern Maine in Portland. In 1999, the program was expanded to York County through the University College at Saco and Sanford. The York County Senior College is governed by a volunteer committee who oversees the general operations of the College.
Membership
Annual membership of $25 per year (from July 1 to June 30) includes access to all Senior College courses, newsletters, and social activities. There is a cost for $25 for each course which includes the cost of the textbook.
Educational field trips and social events are scheduled throughout the year.
Locations
York County Senior College's classes are offered at University College locations in Saco and Sanford.
Saco
The University College at Saco is located at Saco Island on York Hill in Saco in a converted mill complex in Saco, Maine.
Sanford
The University College at Sanford is located in the Anderson Learning Center on the former campus of Nasson College in Springvale, Maine.
Courses
The majority of Senior College courses are taught by volunteer senior peer-teachers on subjects of interest to the members. Classes are held during two sessions each year and generally run for eight weeks unless otherwise stated. No tests are given and no grades are assigned. Scholarships are available for anyone who may have difficulty covering the cost of the course.
