Program Topics Announced
for Bar Harbor Conference
Each year, Maine Senior Colleges
across the state celebrate "learning for the love of it" at the
2006 Maine Senior College Conference, "Meeting of the Minds."
OLLI members are invited to join us this year for the annual event, which
will be held October 22-24, 2006, at the Bar Harbor Regency Holiday Inn in
Bar Harbor, Maine.
Maine Senior College Network is sponsoring the annual conference and the
venue is the former Proctor Gamble estate overlooking the sea—it is on
this site where the first Ivory Soap was made. The Regency is located on
one of the most beautiful oceanfront settings in Bar Harbor. The Regency
is conveniently located near the entrance of Acadia National Park and
one mile from downtown Bar Harbor. With optimum facilities and a full
service staff with unsurpassed hospitality, the Bar Harbor Regency is
the perfect destination for the 2006 Maine Senior College Conference.
The conference is designed
exclusively for the membership and leadership of Maine’s 16 Senior
Colleges. During the three-day program, Senior Scholars may choose from
class sessions taught by selected Senior College faculty from around the
state. Topics include Denial and Deception, Science and Literature, Cats!
The Non-Broadway Version, Croquet, Ben Franklin at 300, Native Americans
in Early Maine, The Greek Creation Myth, Looking at the New Testament with
Jewish Eyes, Scenes from Hamlet, and On the Trail of Maine's Ice Age.
Additionally, the 2006 Senior
College Conference is an invaluable resource for leaders around the state
to engage in lively discussion and sharing of ideas on how to manage and
develop a senior college program. This year the program features expanded
opportunities for networking and sharing of experiences among participants
including 90-minute "Birds of a Feather Flock Together" sessions
for small, medium and large-sized programs. Other topics include: Board
Effectiveness, Active Learning, Marketing and Communications, Membership
Recruitment, Using the Internet, Courses that Work, and How Can Maine
Senior Colleges Do More Together.

What
We're Doing
Here are just a few things that are making news at Senior
Colleges across the State:
Acadia
Senior College hosted a screening of Al Gore's documentary film "An
Inconvenient Truth" at Bar Harbor's screening room, Reel Pizza.
Following the film, the new President of College of the Atlantic, David
Hales, led a discussion and fielded questions about the film. Hale also
gave concrete ways to include in our daily lives to increase
sustainability, such as using one less gallon of gas each week. This would
result in a measurable decrease in CO2 emissions. Members
of University of Maine Augusta hosted the Senior College exhibit booth at
the Lifestyle Expo held at the Augusta Civic Center. More than 2000 people
passed through the exhibit hall.
The
members of Senior College at the Hutchinson Center celebrated the transfer
of the Belfast facility that houses their Senior College. The handover of
the building and grounds was from the Bank of America to the University of
Maine.
Western
Mountain Senior College has formed a Senior Players group. They read and
perform plays, poetry and literature and have scheduled a performance for
December 10th. And speaking of drama, The USM/OLLI Senior Players will be
performing on Friday, October 27 from 3:00-4:30 PM, t in the Luther Bonney
Auditorium on the campus at USM. In addition, on November 5 at 2 PM, they
will perform at the City Theater in Biddeford to generate interest in a
Senior Players group in York County.
At
Penobscot Valley Senior College, members receive a designation as a
"Philomath," a lover of learning, after taking or teaching a
combination of 10 courses.
They are honored at the Annual Meeting.
