2003
Senior College Summer Conference in Presque Isle Enjoyed by Members,
Leaders
More than 125 members
from across the state experienced
the joy and richness of Senior College at the 2003 Senior College Summer
Conference held July 13-15th at the University of Maine Presque
Isle. The word from Presque Isle is that we enjoyed the only three
days of good weather all summer. It reminds us of the adage about
Maine's weather...11 months of winter and one month of bad
sledding. The perfect weather gave us a chance to enjoy the
gracious hospitality of our hosts,
The
University of Maine at Presque Isle and the members of their Senior
College, Seniors Achieving Greater Education (SAGE) and to experience the rural relaxation of summer in northern
Maine.
The 2003 three-day
Summer Conference had two aims:
To bring together the membership of all the Senior Colleges in the state
to participate in enriching classes as Senior Scholars; and secondly, to provide an opportunity for the leaders of Senior
College throughout the state to meet and exchange information during
Leadership Sessions. Judging from the feedback we received, both
goals were met. Attendees, from the 15 Senior Colleges throughout Maine
were
quite enthusiastic in their response to the program.
One
of the greatest benefits to attending the conference was the exciting
dynamic that happens when a group of Senior College members gathers
together in one place, at one time. And
the conference featured many opportunities outside the sessions to laugh
and learn with the other attendees.
The Senior College Summer Conference was planned by the Maine Senior
College Network, which is housed at the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute
at the University of Southern Maine.
To fulfill their mission, the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute
provides assistance and coordination for the Senior College initiative in
Maine. The
planning committee has developed a dynamic conference environment to give
you a chance to learn, meet other members, and enjoy being a part of Maine
Senior College

"It's a
Hit!" According to the 2003 Summer Conference Attendees
The recent 2003 Senior
College Summer Conference in Presque Isle. The event was a great hit—and as we hoped, it was a
wonderful celebration of the Maine Senior College movement.
The superlatives are flowing from all who participated…here is a small
sample from the evaluation and the follow up comments:
- UMPI
and SAGE could not have been better hosts!
- Fabulous!
- I
guess the conference could be called North of Ordinary, too.
- Everything
was first class.
- Excellent
conference, well worth the trip.
- Wasn’t
sure about attending—really glad I did!
- A
positive and uplifting event—very meaningful and purposeful—time
well spent
- The
highlight for me was experiencing the scholar classes and learing from
exceptional educators. They
not only taught content, but I learned methods that I could use in my
quest to share knowledge with my peers.
Modeling is a superb way to learn new ways to do something.
And,
finally…“This was outstanding! The
classes were incredible, many of us said we would do the same thing right
over again. I was very
impressed by the expertise, warmth and friendliness of the leaders and the
“students.’”
This
has become an annual event that is planned and developed by the Maine
Senior College Network.
This year’s program not only provided an opportunity for leaders
to exchange ideas and information on managing our Senior Colleges but
attendees also participated in enriching Summer Scholar sessions that
showcases faculty from all across the state network.
In this way both leaders and members to attended the program
to experience the richness of Senior College.
