2004
New England Regional Conference for
Lifelong Learning Institutes Held in Maine
The
Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at the University of Southern Maine and
the Maine Senior College Network hosted the 2004 New England Regional
Conference for Lifelong Learning Institutes—A Meeting of the Minds—in
greater Portland, Maine on October 24-26th.
More than 350 LLI members from as far away as Quebec and Louisiana to the
north and south, and Iowa to the west came to Portland to
meet with like-minded learners to celebrate cognitive vitality and the
Lifelong Learning Institute movement-and its success-over the past 40
years.
Keynoter Dr. Paul Nussbaum, a licensed clinical
neuropsychologist, praised attendees for their interest in lifelong
learning, a cornerstone of brain health. He also encouraged everyone to
take part in complex activities every day to encourage generation of new
brain cells.
As part of the conference, attendees exchanged ideas
and information on topics such as how
to manage a trip and travel programs, retaining members and volunteers,
public relations, membership recruitment, host relations, recruiting and
selecting faculty. In addition, sessions showcases
new and innovative trends, ideas, and programs in Lifelong Learning such
as service and distance learning and life option centers.
In
addition to the opportunity
for the leaders of Lifelong Learning Institutes throughout the region to
meet and exchange information during Leadership Sessions, for
the first time at a regional conference, the
membership of all of the Lifelong Learning Institutes
to participate in enriching classes as Senior Scholars.
Topics include: The
Two Georges: Washington and George III; Longfellow: A Maine Poet; The Life
and Times of Filippo Brunelleschi and Slavery in the North.
Leadership
Roundtables during the conference were interactive facilitated
discussion sessions that offered a forum for leaders to exchange ideas
with peers in an informal atmosphere.

This
was my first time attending a lifelong learning and it was a wonderful
experience. I met many
wonderful people and have many new ideas to take back to my program.
It
was very stimulating and informative…session offerings were interesting,
informative and pertinent.
