Art shows feature talented Senior
College Members
Maine Senior College members are an
artistic lot, there are many thespians, singers, musicians, writers, and
poets among our ranks. Two of Maine's Senior Colleges have started art
shows to celebrate the accomplishments of the visual artists in our midst.
The Festival of Art at the
Hutchinson Center is now in its 6th year. This May more than 139 artists
exhibited their work at the Center. Among the artists, 55 were artists
returning to the show. Works includes quilting, wood totem carvings,
weavers, painters, jewelry makers, rug makers, metal sculpture, ceramics
and basket makers. In addition, the event featured a demonstration and a
slide lecture.
Maureen Conlon-Peirce, an artist in
Sanford and a member of the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) the
Senior College in Portland, connected with the artists at Hutchinson
Center, and a number of artists from OLLI participated in the shows. In
2004 Conlon-Peirce led the initiative to host a local art show at OLLI,
which will continue with OLLI Art 06 in the fall. The first two shows were
daylong events. Following last year's show, several artists were selected
for a two-month invitational show at Glickman Library on the University of
Southern Maine's Campus. The 2006 show will be held at the Glickman
beginning October 5th and continuing through the end of the year, giving
more exposure to member artists.
